Beach Point Capital Management is a Los Angeles-based multi-strategy hedge fund founded by Carl Goldsmith and Scott Klein, who worked together as an investing team at Post Advisory Group starting in 1997. The fund specializes in high yield bonds, distressed debt and corporate loans, but has some stock investments too. It had $6.5 billion in assets under management as of March 31.

During a 15-year stint at Post, Goldsmith was a senior investment officer. Klein was a senior managing director. Both jointly ran Post's alternative business and co-managed the total return, distressed debt and corporate loan strategies. Goldsmith received his B.A in economics from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business and a J.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law.

According to the latest 13F submission made to the SEC on May 13, Beach Capital owned 29 stocks worth $424.6 million at the end of the first quarter. The fund's portfolio has more than doubled since the previous quarter ($207.9 million, 4Q, 2010). Of its 29 holdings, only six yielded positive returns this quarter.

Beach Point sold three of its holdings -- CIT Group Inc. (NYSE:CIT), Petrohawk Energy Corp.(NYSE:HK) and Tenet Healthcare Corp. (NYSE:THC) -- and cut its stake in four others this quarter. It added 13 new positions.
