Energy sector stocks were among the best performers in 2010. IShares S&P Global Energy (NYSEARCA:IXC) gained 38.1% during the last 12 months, beating the S&P 500 (NYSEARCA:SPY) by a large margin. We prepared a list of 15 energy companies that pay fat dividend checks regularly. All companies on this list have a market capitalization above $900 million, P/E ratio lower than 28, and dividend yield of at least 4.5%. These 15 stocks returned 24.6% (including dividends) during the past 12 months, beating government bonds by a large margin.

1. AmeriGas Partners provides propane gas in the United States. APU recently traded at $44.54 and has a 6.4% dividend yield. APU gained 6.2% during the past 12 months. The stock has a market cap of $2.54 billion and P/E ratio of 17.3. Jim Simons’ Renaissance Technologies had $3.7 million invested in APU at the end of March (See Jim Simons’ top stock picks here).

2. Buckeye Partners operates refined petroleum products pipeline systems in the United States. BPL recently traded at $64.4 and has a 6.1% dividend yield. BPL gained 8.4% during the past 12 months. The stock has a market cap of $5.98 billion and P/E ratio of 27.6.

3. Calumet Specialty Products Partners provides specialty hydrocarbon products in North America. It operates in two segments, Specialty Products and Fuel Products. CLMT recently traded at $23.8 and has a 7.8% dividend yield. CLMT gained 39.1% during the past 12 months. The stock has a market cap of $947 million and P/E ratio of 25.7.

4. Eni SpA is one of the leading integrated energy companies in the world. E recently traded at $45.73 and has a 4.5% dividend yield. E gained 20.3% during the past 12 months. The stock has a market cap of $82.8 billion and P/E ratio of 8.66.

5. Holly Energy Partners operates crude oil pipelines, storage tanks, distribution terminals, and loading rack facilities. HEP recently traded at $52.6 and has a 6.5% dividend yield. HEP gained 19.9% during the past 12 months. The stock has a market cap of $1.16 billion and P/E ratio of 23.1.

6. Magellan Midstream Partners provides transportation, storage, and distribution of refined petroleum products and crude oil in the United States. MMP recently traded at $60.29 and has a 5.1% dividend yield. MMP gained 28.2% during the past 12 months. The stock has a market cap of $6.8 billion and P/E ratio of 19.8. 7. Natural Resource Partners operates coal properties in the United States. NRP recently traded at $34.61 and has a 6.2% dividend yield. NRP gained 47.7% during the past 12 months. The stock has a market cap of $3.67 billion and P/E ratio of 20.5.

8. NuStar Energy provides terminalling, storage, and transportation of petroleum worlwide. NS recently traded at $64.25 and has a 6.7% dividend yield. NS gained 12.4% during the past 12 months. The stock has a market cap of $4.15 billion and P/E ratio of 19.7.

9. Plains All American Pipeline provides crude oil, refined products, and liquefied petroleum gas. PAA recently traded at $64.5 and has a 6.1% dividend yield. PAA gained 8.9% during the past 12 months. The stock has a market cap of $9.62 billion and P/E ratio of 25.7.

10. Seadrill Limited is an offshore drilling contractor. SDRL recently traded at $35.77 and has a 8.4% dividend yield. SDRL gained 75.9% during the past 12 months. The stock has a market cap of $16.59 billion and P/E ratio of 8.67.

11. Suburban Propane Partners is delivering heating oil, propane, natural gas, electricity and power fuels in the U.S. SPH recently traded at $50.61 and has a 6.7% dividend yield. SPH gained 8.6% during the past 12 months. The stock has a market cap of $1.79 billion and P/E ratio of 16.07.

12. Sunoco Logistics Partners is transporting and storing refined products and crude oil. SXL recently traded at $84.9 and has a 5.6% dividend yield. SXL gained 16.6% during the past 12 months. The stock has a market cap of $2.81 billion and P/E ratio of 9.15.

13. TOTAL is one of the leading multinational companies in the oil and gas industry. TOT recently traded at $56.81 and has a 4.8% dividend yield. TOT gained 21.8% during the past 12 months. The stock has a market cap of $127 billion and P/E ratio of 7.44.

14. Teekay Offshore Partners is providing marine transportation and storage services to the offshore oil industry. TOO recently traded at $29.94 and has a 6.7% dividend yield. TOO gained 38.4% during the past 12 months. The stock has a market cap of $1.88 billion and P/E ratio of 23.9.

15. YPF SOCIEDAD ANONIMA is an Argentinean integrated oil and gas company. YPF recently traded at $43.22 and has a 7.9% dividend yield. YPF gained 16.7% during the past 12 months. The stock has a market cap of $17 billion and P/E ratio of 11.73. Eric Mindich’s Eton Park had more than $400 Million in YPF at the end of March.
