In the table below, we highlight S&P 500 stocks with the highest short interest as a percentage of float (>10%). As is typically the case, Consumer Discretionary stocks dominate the list. Of the ten stocks with the highest short interest, six are from the Consumer Discretionary sector. AutoNation (AN) and Netflix (NFLX) are two stocks on the list that have been especially painful for the shorts as the two stocks are up 33.5% and 51.7%, respectively. But for nearly every stock where the shorts have had it handed to them, there is a stock that has been a big winner for them. AK Steel (AKS), Vulcan Materials (VMC), US Steel (X), and Monster Worldwide (MWW) are all down more than 20%.
