In the table below, we highlight S&P 500 stocks with the highest short interest as a percentage of float (>10%). As is typically the case, Consumer Discretionary stocks dominate the list. Of the ten stocks with the highest short interest, six are from the Consumer Discretionary sector. AutoNation (NYSE:AN) and Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) are two stocks on the list that have been especially painful for the shorts as the two stocks are up 33.5% and 51.7%, respectively. But for nearly every stock where the shorts have had it handed to them, there is a stock that has been a big winner for them. AK Steel (NYSE:AKS), Vulcan Materials (NYSE:VMC), US Steel (NYSE:X), and Monster Worldwide (NYSE:MWW) are all down more than 20%.
