In today's low interest environment, with investors searching high and low for safe and stable cash returns, a high yielding stock can be a great addition to a portfolio - especially a common stock, since it receives favorable dividend taxation and the possibility of capital growth going forward.

But finding common stocks yielding over 4% can be difficult. Oftentimes, yields this high are only found in MLPs, REITs, risky financial stocks or companies with worrying prospects going forward. Yet, helped along by the current market malaise, many common stocks have now broken the threshold, and are yielding well above the SP 500 yield of 2.1%.
