George Soros’ largest with an insider purchase is Dendreon Corp. Soros had $102 Million DNDN and one insider, Susan Bayh, purchased 20,000 shares of the stock on September 9 after the huge decline. Dendreon is a biotechnology company focused on the discovery, development and commercialization of therapeutics that may improve cancer treatment options for patients. DNDN has a market cap of $1.76B and suffered huge loss this year: it lost 66.12% since the beginning of the year and lost 69.12% since the end of June. Luckily, Soros decreased his position in DNDN by 45% in the second quarter, which minimized the negative effects to a degree. Steven Cohen was not so lucky. He held more than $300 million in DNDN and increased his position by 5% in the second quarter (check out Cohen’s top stock picks).

In the second quarter, Soros initiated a brand new $42 million Comcast position. One insider, Michael Angelakis, bought 25,000 shares of CMCSA on September 5. Comcast provides video, high-speed Internet and phone services. It has a market cap of $62.98B and a P/E ratio of 16.66. CMCSA has a return of 1.98% since the beginning of the year. John Paulson and Jean-Marie Eveillard had more than 20 Billion shares of CMCSA (check out Paulson’s top stock picks).

Soros largely increased his position in Harvest Natural Res. by 172% in the second quarter, and he had $30 Million HNR at the end of June. Robert Speirs also purchased 44,600 shares of HNR on May 23. Harvest is an international petroleum exploration and production company. HNR has a market cap of 418.57M and it returned 1.46% since the beginning of the year. Robert Speirs made 8% from his purchase.

General Motors has the biggest number of insider purchases since March. Seven insiders bought the stock since then (check out the list of the insiders purchased GM here). GM. is a global automotive company. It has a market cap of 35.25B and a P/E ratio of 4.90. GM lost 38.75% since the beginning of this year. Soros decreased his position in GM by 28% during the second quarter and had $20 Million GM at the end of June. Other main investors in GM include Jeffrey Tannenbaum and Frank Brosens.

Among all the stocks Soros and insiders like, UNH, DISH, CHTR, TIVO and PFE achieved the highest return since the beginning of the year, while DNDN, ANR, GM, ARX and FCX performed worst. We like Soros. Although some of the stocks picked by Soros and insiders underperformed the market, we still believe that investors can outperform the market over the long-term by focusing on the stock picks of these smart and connected investors.
