Hello, and welcome to the Nordstrom Monthly Sales Recording. [Operator Instructions] Before we begin, let me remind everyone that today's comments will contain forward-looking statements, which are subject to risks and uncertainties that could cause the company's actual results to differ materially from the expectations and assumptions discussed due to a variety of factors that affect the company, including the risks specified in the company's most recently filed Form 10-K and Form 10-Q.
And now, let's go to today's speaker.
Good morning, everyone. I'm Rob Campbell with Nordstrom Investor Relations. Thank you for listening to the Nordstrom September sales recording.
Earlier today, Nordstrom reported that same-store sales for the 5-week period that ended October 1, 2011, increased 10.7% compared with the 5-week period ended October 2, 2010. Preliminary total retail sales of $943 million for September 2011 increased 16.3% compared with total retail sales of $810 million for the same period in fiscal 2010.
Quarter-to-date same-store sales increased 9.0% compared with the same period in fiscal 2010. Preliminary quarter-to-date total retail sales of $1.63 billion increased 14.6% compared with total retail sales of $1.43 billion for the same period in fiscal 2010.
Year-to-date same-store sales increased 7.4% compared with the same period in fiscal 2010. Preliminary year-to-date total retail sales of $6.58 billion increased 12.8% compared with total retail sales of $5.83 billion for the same period in fiscal 2010.
Looking at the month of September, the strongest regional performances for full-line stores were in the South and Mid-Atlantic areas. The Northwest region had softer performance during the month. California was below the full-line store average, although within that, Northern California and San Diego stores performed above the full-line store average. Among the strongest performing merchandise categories on a multi-channel basis were Dresses, Handbags and Designers.
Sales trended higher in the middle of the month. During the month, both the number of transactions for our full-line stores and average ticket increased compared with the same period in fiscal 2010.
Thank you for listening to today's call which will be available for one week.
