Below is an updated list of the 50 best-performing Russell 3,000 stocks so far this year. While the average stock in the Russell 3,000 is actually down 5.71% year to date, the 50 best-performing stocks in the index are up an average of 124.39%. There are currently 25 stocks in the index that are up more than 100% year to date.

Inhibitex (NASDAQ:INHX) is currently the best performing Russell 3,000 stock year to date with a gain of just under 500%. Pharmasset (VRUS) ranks number two with a 2011 gain of 490%, and that won't change much, since the company is in the midst of being acquired.

There's a big drop-off in performance between the number two and three stocks. Medivation (NASDAQ:MDVN) is currently the third-best-performing Russell 3,000 stock year-to-date, up 215.95%. Questcor (NASDAQ:QCOR) ranks fourth with a gain of 192.67%, and Golar (NASDAQ:GLNG) rounds out the top five with a gain of 191.76%.

There are very few household names on this year's Top 50 list, but the ones that are able to keep up the strong performance will become known soon enough. It's definitely worthwhile to dig deeper into all of the stocks on the list to find out what they do and if they might be attractive options for your portfolio.
