What do AT&T (T), Apple (AAPL), American Express (AXP), and AFLAC (AFL) have in common? They are all stocks which Goldman Sachs (GS) has a 100 million dollar plus stake in that are listed on Goldman’s 13F-HR filing.

Goldman Sachs’ 13 F-HR contains literally hundreds of stocks. Below is a chart of Goldman holdings that may be of interest to long-term investors wishing to set up a retirement portfolio. For the purpose of this example, only stocks beginning with the letter A were examined. One may find any give institution’s 13 F-HR by entering the company’s name and “13 F-HR” in a Google search box.

Although there are literally hundreds of ways to slice and dice such a large universe of stocks, the simple criteria for the list below includes the following:

  • Dividend Payer or high growth potential
  • Goldman has a Put/Call Option spread in place to hedge their positions which indicates to some degree the importance of the position to their portfolio.

This is a list of solid companies. Not bad for just the letter A from Goldman Sachs’ universe of stocks. Novice investors may wish to take note that most of the stocks listed have a minimum price per share of $20.00 with the exception of Avon. There are no stocks on the list for $5.00 or less. This may seem meaningless, but veteran investors would most likely agree that most actively traded stocks are priced above $20.00 per share.
