It's important to know whether a company tries to uphold shareholder interests in how they manage their operations. One way to gauge this is by looking at corporate governance risks.

Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS) gives ratings for four areas of corporate governance, on risks related to: the board, the audit committee, the compensation committee, and shareholder rights.

We ran a screen on high dividend yield stocks (those paying dividend yields above 3%) for those that also received "low risk" ratings on all four corporate governance categories from ISS. Since dividends benefit shareholders, strong corporate governance policies may bode well for the dividends' sustainability.
