According to Media Daily News, at a recent Cable TV Advertising Bureau conference, ESPN's ED Gordon reported that 57% of households surveyed were not interested in using DVRs.  Details below:

According to Gordon, ESPN's director of local and affiliate research, 90 of 157 'non-early adopters' simply didn't want their Digital Video Recorders and returned them.  Among the reasons cited:  the installation process; cost; and design (i.e. it didn't match with other home furnishings).  Among those who did not return their DVRs, most continued to watch commercials, even in fast forward mode.  ESPN is currently studying a larger group of about 1,000 households.  Below are some statistics from the original study:

Households recruited:
Cable DVR: 117
TIVO: 40
Total: 157

Households that returned their DVR:
Cable DVR: 67
TIVO: 23
Total: 90
