Biosite (ticker: BSTE) held its annual R&D day in New York earlier this week. Not a lot of new developments. Company put its best foot forward in trying to get the Street excited about the future in light of the maturing and increasingly competitive BNP testing market. There is concern that BNP sales, which make up about two-thirds of Biosite's total revenues, is facing a bleak future due to the fact the company has penetrated about 60% of the hospital market and pricing pressure. This has investors asking, "What's next?"
Biosite laid out the development strategies for several new tests. The sepsis test is scheduled to go into clinical studies later this year or early next with a planned 2007 launch. The company also went over its development stage assays for acute coronary syndromes (ACS), abdominal pain and stroke.
