In a brief interview with Tech Trader Daily, Horwitz noted that the new sensor shrinks the pixel size to 1.75 microns from 2.2 microns in the previous generation technology. The result, he says, is that the company will be able to make a 1/4-inch square image sensor; and that, he says, will make it easier for handset makers to put cameras in more of their phones. Horwitz says products with the new technology will appear in the calendar third quarter.
Horwitz reiterated that the company’s presentation at the J.P. Morgan conference Wednesday will not include any comments on the quarter just ended (which will be reported next Thursday) or on the company’s outlook.
Horwitz also says he has heard “nothing else” that might be driving up the stock price, and has head “no new rumors.”
As I noted earlier, Omnivision shares Wednesday are sharply higher, now up 69 cents, or 4.7%, at $15.34.
