Dividend stock selections continue to be of interest in the light of continuing low interest rates limiting the returns from bonds. We have seen that not all high dividend stocks are good value, however. We are trawling through the many selections (over 60) we have reviewed to drill down to the best of the best, and note the most commonly used. We have reviewed ten selections so far and have rejected six.

The four which are becoming our measuring stick are:

Portfolio/Fund Name 1Yr AR 1Yr Sharpe 3Yr AR 3Yr Sharpe 5Yr AR 5Yr Sharpe
Fools 5 Dividend Payers to Save your Portfolio 26% 172% 21% 137% 11% 55%

3 Bargain Dividends Investors Should Buy Today 27% 150% 24% 135%
4 Special Dividend Plays 16% 59% 26% 98%

In this selection we pick up 6 and 7 equity selections. We list out the stocks in each of the selections. There are no repeats in any of the portfolios.

One Year Chart Three Year Chart Five Year Chart

When I look at the five year chart, the 7 Dividend Stocks Pumping Payouts is a very volatile selection. If you want something that you have to watch carefully but for which there may be some upside, then keep watching it and await a drop followed by the upside. The less volatile selections don't have the growth that the others have shown.

I am surprised that these perform so poorly for the long term investor, I think they are ones to miss.

We will keep digging and reviewing and see what the next set of dividend equity selections bring us. In the long run, the best will come to the top.
