I ran a scan looking for stocks and funds with recent insider buying. I also list, for consideration, current news which could partly explain the insider buying. Insider buying often reflects how those associated with the company and/or fund feel about its future prospects, and also indicates confidence in future share price appreciation. I recommend investors who find the information useful in this article use this information as a starting point for their own due diligence.

American River Bankshares (AMRB)

2/21/12 pps: $6.90

American River Bankshares operates as the holding company for American River Bank that provides commercial banking services to small to mid-sized businesses in California. It accepts checking and savings deposits, as well as offers money market deposit accounts and certificates of deposit.

AMRB earned $1 million in the fourth quarter of 2011, in comparison to $77,000 for the same period in 2010, a huge 1,235.1% increase. The Q4 earnings represent the second quarter in a row where the bank earned more than $1 million.

Star Gas Partners (SGU)

2/21/12 pps: $4.63

Star Gas through its subsidiary Petro Holdings, Inc., operates as a home heating oil distributor and services provider in the United States.

On Feb. 7, 2012, Star released earnings for the three-month period ended December 31, 2011 and for the fiscal 2012 first quarter, Star reported a 0.4 percent increase in total revenues to $461.5 million, compared with total revenues of $459.5 million in the prior year period.

Dan Donovan, Star Gas Partners' Chief Executive Officer remarked:

This was clearly a tough quarter for Star, as we faced weather conditions nearly the opposite of last year. Of course, such variations in temperature are not uncommon, particularly during a short time period, but the comparison this quarter was dramatic. November and December of 2011, taken together, was the third warmest such period over the last 30 years in our footprint, while 2010's equivalent time frame was the fourth coldest. Even given such challenging conditions, which have continued into January 2012, we remain dedicated to improving operating efficiencies, diversifying our products and services, and maintaining excellent customer service.

Even with what seems like bad news for Star Gas, the insiders are buying substantial blocks of shares in the company:

All of these substantial buys occurred after the company's earnings report. This is significant, as it indicates these top insiders feel things will drastically improve. 63,000 share purchased by insiders in a one week period is bullish. The stock indicates a possible 20% gain this year, so investors might want to join the insiders on this one and buy some shares.

FIRST OPPTY FUND (OTC:FOFI)

2/21/12 pps: $6.77

FOFI is a closed-end fund that has highly concentrated positions in hedge funds which total about 51% of the fund assets and are managed by Vanguard's Wellington fund. FOFI trades as a pink sheet on the OTC market.

FOFI is basically a hedge fund that allows the average investor to participate in. A normal hedge fund is harder for many investors to take part in. They normally require one to be an accredited investor with a net worth of at least $1 million.

Insider buying of this fund is mainly being done by one family; The Horejsi family. Does that name sound familiar? It should for those who closely follow the market, the Horejsi family were early investors in Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A).

Mildred and Lola sure seem to like this closed end fund quite a bit! There has not been any sales that I can find, just consistent buys as you see above. Investors might want to consider this fund to allot some money into for some extra diversification.

The Horejsi family are also buying up the Denali Fund Inc (DNY), the Boulder Total Return Fund (BTF), and the Boulder Growth & Income Fund (BIF), so you might want to check those out as well, if you qualify to invest into those funds.

There has been some significant buys lately of this company, namely, the company CEO Jim Dennedy and CFO Robert Ellis. Dennedy has somewhat of a reputation of being involved with companies that end up being bought out.

As President of Engryo, he sold his firm to Microsoft (MSFT) in 2007, and as a board member of Entrust, he helped sell that firm as well. This guy is not buying shares in Agilysys without a good reason. I smell a possible buy-out coming here with Agilysys.

Going back to last summer, we can see insiders have been consistently buying the stock around the pps range it currently sells for. The insiders obviously are feeling bullish about their company. Coupling this with the nice dividend payout, investors might want to put Dorchester on their radar.
