Hickey and Walters (Bespoke) submit: Today's Wall Street Journal ran a story on the current boom in the global crane industry, and how a number of construction projects around the world have been put on hold or changed due to a shortage of cranes. Investors looking to profit from this trend will also find that there are a shortage of companies that specialize in cranes.

We ran a quick search and came up with the following list sorted by market cap. We would caution that these are companies which themselves claim to specialize in cranes. Where they actually generate their revenues and profits is another matter. Readers may recall that one name on the list, NETP, used to be an Internet software firm. When and how they changed gears to specialize in cranes is another matter.

A safer way to play the crane story alongside the construction boom is Siemens. As Europe's largest engineering and construction services company, they also have a strong foothold in China, supplying everything from cranes to high-speed trains. And yes, that rhymed a bit.

If you go overseas, you can find Favelle-Favco (Malaysia), among others.
