Tip for Lowering Energy Bills

Higher energy rates mean it's worth looking for ways to cut your home usage. One idea -- replace high-use, standard incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient bulbs that have earned the EPAs 'Energy Star'. Energy Star-qualified light fixtures and bulbs use 2/3 less energy than traditional lighting and last up to 10 times longer. By replacing just five of your home's most frequently used fixtures -- or the light bulbs in them -- with energy-efficient lighting, you can save more than $60 each year in energy costs.

For more, see the Energy Star lighting site.

  • Thanks, good point lelnet.

Another blogger, LifeHacker, reprinted this entry from SMT and a commenter there gave another good tip:

As an alternative to the CFLs that energy star recommends, you could also try out some LED bulbs, which give off a nice shine, use about half the energy of a CFL bulb and last much longer.

This one claims to last forever, and uses about 4 watts, as opposed to 32 watts for a typical CFL bulb:

  • Also, they don't get as hot as regular incandescent bulbs.
