The Nikkei 225 ended the week at 14,075.96, the first time it has finished above 14,000 since May 23, 2001. (Bloomberg) It was up 181.18 points on Friday (+1.30%), making for a total gain of 729.42 points over the week (+5.5%). The TOPIX Index closed Friday at 1,494.99 (up 20.74 points, +1.41%), establishing another 5-year intraday high this week. The yen now stands at 25+ month lows against the dollar at nearly Y117.5/US$1. The yen lost nearly 2 points to the dollar over the week.
Market leaders in Tokyo on Friday of stocks with ADRs included: Nomura Holdings (ticker: NMR) +5.98%, Kubota Corp (ticker: KUB) +5.84%, Mitsubishi UFJ Fin. Grp. (ticker: MTU) +4.43%, Hitachi Ltd (ticker: HIT) +3.35%, Advantest Corp (ticker: ATE) +3.12%, NEC Corp (ticker: NIPNY) +3.10%, Pioneer Corp (ticker: PIO) +3.03%, Matsushita Electric Industrial (ticker: MC) +2.97%, Sony Corp (ticker: SNE) +2.89%, TDK Corp (ticker: TDK) +2.50%, Canon Inc (ticker: CAJ) +1.95%, and Sanyo Electric (ticker: SANYY) +1.85%. On the opposite end, NTT DoCoMo (ticker: DCM) lost 2.48% on the day.
