June Retail Same-Store Sales Roundup
Retailers reported mixed June same-store sales on Thursday. Collectively, retailers beat analyst expectations by 0.1%. On average, same-store sales growth in June was 2.1% weaker than May's stronger numbers. Notable beats include Wal-Mart's decisive 2.4% growth, way outdoing analyst forecasts of only 0.8% and Macy's weaker-than-expected 2.7% decline (vs. -1.9% estimates). Retail sales growth from February through June 2007 has been at about half of 2006's pace over the same period. Susquehanna analyst Thomas Filandro said on July 9 mall traffic "remained sluggish," while another analyst said retailers are "just trying to minimize their losses."
In the following table, arrows indicate whether a retailer beat (up), missed (down) or was in line with analyst expectations.
