Hewlett-Packard, Canon Lead the Peripheral Device Industry
-

These are the findings of two recent ChangeWave Research surveys – a June consumer survey on peripheral devices and digital cameras, and a May survey on corporate demand for business peripherals (all-in-one devices, printers and copiers).
Consumer Spending On Peripherals
In our June survey of 3,881 consumers, H-P and Canon topped the list of peripheral manufacturers.
Both companies posted strong gains in printers and scanners (H-P up 9-pts to 59%; Canon up 3-pts to 24%), and maintained their current share in all-in-one devices. In terms of overall ownership, H-P continues to dominate both categories
But looking ahead, Canon shows surprisingly strong momentum – with 23% of respondents reporting that they’ll buy an all-in-one device (up 4-pts) and 20% saying they’ll buy a printer/scanner (up 3-pts). We note that H-P (50%) also fared very well in printers, up 12-points.

Conversely, Lexmark (LXK) appears headed in the opposite direction, dropping 5% in all-in-one devices.
Corporate Buying of Peripherals
Our May survey of corporate IT buyers revealed similar patterns, with H-P on top in both current and future share of peripherals. Canon is a solid second in all-in-one devices but exhibited weakness in printers, where H-P remains the 800-pound gorilla.
H-P’s clear dominance of the business market and Canon’s hold on second, can be seen in the chart below – which shows current ownership of all-in-one devices among corporate buyers compared to those who plan to buy over the next 90 days:
Turning To Digital Cameras: Canon is King
The big advantage for Canon lies in digital cameras, where it remains the clear leader of a vibrant marketplace. Among the four-in-five respondents to our June survey who own a digital camera, 36% report having a Canon. Its closest competitor – Sony – lags by 20-pts.

Importantly, a healthy growth rate is seen for the next 90 days, with 10% of survey respondents saying they’ll buy a compact or point-and-shoot digital camera and another 4% saying a digital SLR. But which brands will most people buy?
No surprise here – a huge 40% say there next camera will be a Canon. In addition, consumer interest in Nikon (NINOY.PK) (19%) is on the rise, and the company looks well positioned for the next 90 days.
On the flip side, Kodak (EK) (5%) looks to be hard pressed to maintain its current share.

H-P and Canon – Leading the Herd
As you’ve seen, our two surveys in combination show H-P leading the peripheral devices industry but looking over its shoulder at a momentum-driven Canon.
Previously known for its domination in digital cameras, Canon is now a major force to be reckoned with in the peripherals marketplace. And it has been developing its powerful presence right in H-P’s backyard.
Bottom Line: Midst a lively digital camera market and a growing trend toward all-in-one peripheral devices, the market forces are lining up well for Canon. It has the momentum going forward.
In upcoming Alliance surveys we’ll continue to monitor who’s winning and losing the race to dominate in peripherals and cameras. Stay tuned.
