The Nikkei 225 started the week where it left off Friday, surging past 14,800 in morning trading. Profit taking began in the afternoon sending it down below its prior close until a late push at the end that brought the Nikkei 225 back into positive ground. The bank-heavy TOPIX experienced a similar pattern but ended down as financial stocks were sold ahead of a big earnings week for the sector.

Nikkei 225: +57.31 (+0.39%) to close at 14,680.43, opened nearly 100 points higher from Friday's close of 14,623.12, intra-day high of 14,808.21, intra-day low of 14,590.56

TOPIX: -4.09 (-0.27%) to close at 1,527.56, opened nearly 10 points higher from Friday's close of 1,531.65, intra-day high of 1,548.83, intra-day low of 1,521.79

JASDAQ: +0.21 (+0.19%) to close at 109.45, traded as high as 109.75 and traded in the 109 range throughout the day
