Major pipeline opens today

The Baku-Tibilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline started flowing today.  The pipeline is 1,100 miles and stretches through the countries Azerbaijan, Georgia and ending at the port of Ceyhan in Turkey.   Initially its planned for 400,000 b/d with tanker loads expected to occur in the 4Q.   By the end of the decade the pipeline is expected to carry one million barrels a day. 

The WSJ article (paid subscription required) makes little mention of the political situation in Azerbaijan.  Which is unfortunate because this $3.6 billion investment is in a hot zone.  There were protests last week in the capital of  Baku. There is a great article from the Asia Times discussing the project even going as far as referring to the area as "Pipelineistan" .  Very clever and actually very appropriate.
