The theoretical safety and predictability of mutual funds has, at times, attracted the conservative investor in me. But the actual transaction, unlike buying and selling stocks or ETFs, always left me wanting more excitement, more involvement.

Closed-end funds (CEF), with their mutual fund-like management and their equity-like tradability, offer, in my opinion, a wonderful option for conservative, yet actively involved investors, like me.

As CEFs pay out before-tax distributions to investors, they are also a great choice for those looking for annual, quarterly or monthly income.

In this series, which focuses on monthly income ideas, I will target monthly distributing CEFs with significant, 8% to 18% yields. To begin, below are four CEFs with 12% to 18% yields, distributed monthly:

Cornerstone Strategic Value Fund Inc. (NYSEMKT:CLM), with an annual distribution rate of 17.60%, distributes $0.1109 per share to investors each month. The CEF is trading at a 17.57% premium to its $6.43 net asset value (NAV) and is currently 6.04% below its 200-day simple moving average (SMA).
