Cisco (CSCO) is looking to buy a company in the WiMax base station business, the web site Unstrung.com reported Thursday. Unstrung said that, according to two industry sources, Cisco could announce a deal in that sector within a matter of weeks.
According to the story, potential targets include Alvarion (ALVR), and three private companies, Aperto Networks, Navini Networks (lucky for them, they’re not called Nagini Networks) and Redline Communications Inc.
As Unstrung notes, there would be some complications to buying Avarion:
Alvarion’s sheer size, location in Israel, and legacy portfolio may count against it; the company is considered as potentially more difficult to integrate into the Cisco organization. Despite this, Cisco is said to find Alavarion’s reach into emerging markets appealing.
