With the S&P 1,500 within one percent of its all-time closing high, we looked to see where the average stock is trading with respect to its 52-week high. In the chart below we calculated the distance each stock in the index is trading from its 52-week high and then grouped them according to sectors.
Overall, the average stock is currently 16.7% from its high. Looking at individual sectors, even after the recent rally in certain retailers and the homebuilders, Consumer Discretionary stocks are the furthest from their peaks, as the average stock in the sector is down 24% from its high. The Energy sector has held up the best since the Summer, with the average stock only 10% from its 52-week high.
