The cost effectiveness of compute clusters and grids is well established. As these clusters get deployed for high performance applications there is a need for high performance connectivity to IP and storage networks. Traditional architectures use separate overlay networks for this connectivity. However, overlay networks provide limited performance, are extremely expensive and require the operation of multiple networks, which is cumbersome and unwieldy.
Voltaire's (VOLT) intelligent interconnect solutions enable seamless connectivity between server clusters, FC SANs, NAS appliances and TCP/IP networks (LANs). All storage and networking traffic is carried over high performance InfiniBand links, resulting in one high-performance, simple to manage, shared network. Every server node now has high performance connectivity to all of the storage and network resources. With efficient connectivity, all storage and networking resources now appear as shared pools of resources thereby improving the utilization tremendously.

Pooled or shared resources can also be partitioned or virtualized for each user or application. Virtualization makes these resources more manageable and easy to use from a user's perspective. These virtualization capabilities also provide dynamic resource provisioning such that resources can be allocated and reallocated dynamically, enabling the utility computing model. Voltaire's routers incorporate intelligent capabilities to allow Layer 4-7 level virtualization. The end result is the efficiency of a shared pool and the operational ease of a custom application.
