Do you like to follow earnings season to try and find stocks that might offer an earnings surprise? When a company reports better earnings than the market anticipated, it usually prices in a higher stock price as a result. For ideas on how to screen the earnings roster, we ran a screen.

We began by screening the list of companies reporting their first-quarter earnings next week for those rallying above their 20-day, 50-day, and 200-day moving averages. We then screened these names for those that have the favor of smart money investors, with significant net institutional purchases over the last quarter above 5% of share float.

Clearly institutional investors such as hedge fund managers expect these names to outperform, and their recent rallies indicate the market also believes in these names.
