Social Networking Sites: Blogger is Biggest, Facebook Growing Fastest

According to internet research firm comScore, Blogger had the largest number of unique visitors of all social-networking sites in September, but Facebook grew the fastest. Yahoo's Geocities and Yahoo! Groups are struggling, but its Flickr.com service grew almost 100% year-over-year. Blogger is gaining market share from Typepad (Six Apart) in the blog space, and Wordpress.com is now significantly larger than Typepad.

Things that really make websites take off are niches. If a unique service is offered at one website, and it is a service that people desire, that website will really take off. One such example is Ebay. Ebay offered an online auction site where people can bid on items. The uniqueness of this was that it was online and so access was granted to the world. It's like having a yard sale where anyone in the world can buy my old TV - amazing. Another example of a niche that is sure to take over is Zovue.com.
