It is one of the Four Asian Tigers. It is rated 16th in terms of GDP by purchasing power parity. It is rated 23rd in terms of GDP per capita. GDP real growth averages 8% for the last 30 years. It is a major foreign investor in mainland China, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. It has the third largest foreign reserves in the world. Its students have some of the highest test scores in the world. It has a literacy rate of 96.1%.

Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc. (ASX), which trades on the New York Stock Exchange, is a provider of semiconductor packaging and testing services. The stock has a P/E of 15.3, a PEG of 0.38, and a yield of 2.4%. AU Optronics Corp. (AUO), which trades on the NYSE, designs, makes and sells thin film transistor liquid crystal display panels. The stock has a P/E of 157, a PEG of 1.2, and a yield of 0.1%. Chunghwa Telecom Co. Ltd. (CHT) is a large telecommunications company in Taiwan which provides landline, cellular, and Internet services. The stock has a P/E of 12.84, a PEG of 8.41, and a fairly high yield of 4.5%. Himax Technologies, Inc. (HIMX), which trades on NASDAQ, develops and sells semiconductors that are used with flat panel displays. The stock has a P/E of 9.95, a PEG of 0.41, and a high yield of 5.2%. Silicon Motion Technology Corp. (SIMO), designs, markets, and sells semiconductor solutions. The stock has a P/E of 18, and a PEG of 0.49. Siliconware Precision Industries Co. Ltd. (SPIL), produces semiconductor packaging and testing services. The stock has a P/E of 165, a PEG of 0.74, and a yield of 3.1%. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSM) makes, and markets integrated circuits and other semiconductor devices. The stock has a P/E of 15.71, a PEG of 0.63, and a yield of 3.5%. United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) is a manufacturer, and marketer of integrated circuits. The stock has a P/E of 14.84, a PEG of 1.21, and a yield of 5%.
