While it seems like the major averages were just recently up more than 10% on the year, many less active investors will be surprised to see that the S&P 500 is now up less than 1% on the year. Below we highlight the percentage of stocks that are up on the year grouped by sector and market capitalization. Currently, in the S&P 500 (large caps), S&P 400 (mid caps) and S&P 600 (small caps), less than half the stocks in each index are up on the year.

Not surprisingly, Financials and Consumer Discretionary are currently the sectors that have the lowest percentage of stocks up on the year, and within each sector, small caps are faring the worst. In the small cap Consumer Discretionary sector, only 18.4% of the stocks are up on the year, while in the Financial sector, only 12.5% of small cap stocks are up.
