NTT DoCoMo (DCM) provided updated figures for its 3G and 2G subscriber base on Friday. Its 3G system is called FOMA, meaning Freedom of Mobile Multimedia Access. NTT DoCoMo announced that as of December 29th, total 3G subscribers broke the 20 million mark. The total number of subscriptions for both 2G and 3G was approximately 51.1 million at the end of last November. FOMA is now less than 1% away from representing 40% of all subscribers. Japan has a total of population of no more than 130-million by 2004 estimates. That means that nearly 40% of the entire population uses a DoCoMo cell phone with about 16% of them using 3G FOMA.
