Give a Secret Santa Gift Worth Giving
Many companies try to lighten the "all business" mood of the office by arranging gift exchanges. Secret Santa style exchanges can be a good idea, but they often cause more anxiety than they alleviate. Here are some suggestions for office gift giving.
1) Decide on a spending limit. Nobody wants office gifts to be a major expense. Allbusiness.com suggests 10-15 dollars, while Fox News suggests 25 dollars.
2) Keep the gift simple and personal but not too personal. According to Time Inc. Giftscriptions, 31 percent of employees throw away gifts from co-workers. However, you should also avoid presents like cologne, jewelry and clothing that might be too personal. Ask co-workers who are closer with your gift recipient for suggestions.
3) If you are really stuck and have no idea what to buy your co-worker, consider a gift card. Gift cards ensure that the recipient will receive something he or she wants but are more personal than cash.
4) Do you have to get something for the boss? I don't think so. That said, if your boss gets you something, make sure to write a thank you card. Also, it's always nice to show your boss that you appreciate him or her. Purchasing a present with co-workers is a much better idea than buying your boss a present by yourself because it shows true appreciation instead of brown-nosing.
