Micron Producing Smallest 1 GB DDR2 Memory Chip

Micron Technology (MU) said Wednesday that it is producing its new 1 GB DDR2 memory chip, the smallest of its kind.

The company added that mass production is slated for “early next year.”

Micron’s chip is fabricated on 68-nanometer DRAM process technology. That process along with Micron’s technology has allowed the 1 GB DDR2 chip to use a die of 56 mm.

According to Micron its new memory chip should increased speed and decrease power consumption by 20 percent compared to previous versions. The chip will be targeted at the server and mobile computing markets where power consumption matters. Micron added that DDR3 products are in the pipeline. These new memory chips will reside in Micron’s Aspen Memory family of energy efficient products.
