Tip for Avoiding Mass Mailings
In today's "Ask Personal Journal" column of the Wall Street Journal, a reader "asked" how to avoid being included on mass mailing lists (in his case the reader made a donation to one charity BUT received charitable solicitations from a host of others). The answer (courtesy of the WSJ):
One way is to register with the Direct Marketing Association's Mail Preference Service to have your name and address placed in a "do-not-mail" file. The registration is good for five years. Still, not every direct mailer participates so Bennett Weiner, chief operating officer of the BBB Wise Giving Alliance, recommends also taking other steps like giving larger gifts to a few organizations rather than smaller donations to a number of charities and sending a letter letting the charity know you don't want your information given out. You also could ask the other charities by mail to stop contacting you. Be sure to include the original mailing label, which often has information needed to process your request.
