About this author: Author's VC firm:

I mentioned in my thoughts from the eliptical trainer post yesterday that I don't like my iPod Touch. Several commenters asked why. Here's why:

1) It's 16gb. My former iPod was 60gb and you can now get 160gb iPod classic for $349 whereas the 16gb iPod Touch is $399.

2) My iTunes library is around 50gb. So when I synch the iPod Touch, I have to synch a single playlist. When I find new music, rip CDs, buy music on Amazon MP3, etc, I often forget to add it to my iPod Touch synch playlist. So I walk out the door and the music I want isn't on it.

2) The user interface is completely different than iPod classic. It mirrors the iPhone music interface. Which I hate. Sometimes I get stuck in the screen listening to a song and can't figure out how to get out. The buttons across the bottom for artists, songs, albums are so small that I often select the wrong one.  It took me days to figure out that you had to click on the screen a second time to see how much time was left on the song or change the setting from shuffle to regular play. And those shuffle buttons are so small it takes me forever to change them. The audio volume slider is not granular enough so I am always fussing with it for 15 or 20 seconds to get it right and I often blow out my ears as I make that selection.

3) I never use the wifi or browswer on it because I have a wifi blackberry curve and that is so much more useful because it has email, sms and google maps on it. I know that for a $20 upgrade you can put additional apps on your iPod Touch, but I don't really care to do that anyway.

4) I find it hard to pause the music and lock the screen. I've been in meetings when my iPod Touch started playing through the earbuds because I leaned on it through my jacket.

The bottom line is that the iPod Touch suffers from not being a very good iPod and not being a iPhone. If you want an iPhone, get one. If you want an iPod, get an iPod Classic.

Errrr...why did you ever buy it if you needed your entire library on your iPod?!?!

Fred is one pickle short of a sandwich in my opinion.

Sounds to me like you simply bought the wrong bit of kit. For someone who "focuses exclusively on information technology investments" (from your bio), perhaps you should research before you invest!

To make sure you have your freshest tunes on the iPod Touch, just add the "Recently Added" playlist to the list of playlists that you sync. This is a smart playlist that includes all items added in the past 2 weeks (you can edit the playlist if you want to make the window of time longer). Other good smart playlists to sync are "Recently Played" and "Purchased".

I have an iPhone, not an iPod Touch, and I do agree that having to manage what songs to carry with me is not as convenient as just carrying everything, but smart playlists make this a tolerable trade off.

I echo the other comments on here... you bought the WRONG device for your particular needs. The Touch isn't for YOU! Do some research to see what device fits your needs. With 50 GB of music it seems like you are starting to out grow your previous 60 GB iPod. Which you seemed to have loved. So what the hell did you get an iPod Touch for!!?? A 3rd grader could surmise that, viola' -- the 160 GB Classic was the device for you. And you could have saved yourself 50 bucks to put toward getting buying yourself a brain. You have a lot of nerve, when I OWN APPLE STOCK, to put up a completely MISLEADING headline like this. They are YOUR 4 PROBLEMS!!! You should be fired immediately and go to work for Microsoft. Clearly you have your vested interest in those shares. Idiot.

Sounds like you need to learn how to use your gear. And number your complaints correctly.

Most negative commentary on Apple products seem to come from people who don't buy the right product for their needs and don't take the time to learn how to use it. The also tend to complain about features the product was not intended to do in the first place.

Maybe you just needed something quick for your column and this mess was the first thing you squeezed out.

I agree with some of the comments if you needed the space to fit the whole library why did you buy it in the first place ??
secondly didn't you try it before getting one or maybe you got one for free as a gift?? that would explain why the interface is so annoying to you , a trip to an Apple store and a hands on try out should help you for the next time

This is very funny. With all your complaints about not being able to see the Touch's icons, I think it's not the iPod that's the problem, it's your eyes. Face it, you're just too old to playing around with a young person's gadget.

Personal comments on a company's individual product have little to with SeekingAlpha, a blog for financial commentary and analysis. It's a bit like complaining about McDonald's hamburgers: analyze the business and the stock, not whether you think the Big Macs should have more ketchup.

is this a retirement job for you?

these sound like comments from someone who isn't comfortable with tech and doesn't really understand how to use the product or its features. Fake steve jobs would say "this product isn't for you and don't get it out in public and harsh the brand".

The iPod touch is all about the user interface, the audio and, more importantly, the video playback, the WiFi browsing and, more recently, the 4 new apps.

Since you only use the audio playback and you don't even know how to use that properly, why the hell did you buy one?

Do us all a favor and sell it on E-Bay or give it to someone who will appreciate it.

I hope you read the comments here because they are all accurate. Now reread them. Now read them again. You bought a product that gives you all the features you do not need because you also carry a Blackberry Curve.??? You are to incompetent to have a smartlist sync your new songs to your touch automatically.

You also then lie about your music playing because you leaned on it through your jacket. It does not work that way. You "do not care" to add the features you complain it lacks.

You clearly cannot count by the five things you list, yet number them 1,2,2,3,4. I am guessing you are on the same level as my 2 year old niece, although she has been able to get out of a song she wants to end. I guess either I should be very proud of her or you should be very embarrassed. I am leaning toward the latter.

It is shocking that you are supposed to write about anything to do with technology. I could agree with the others that you are an idiot but more importantly I think you are simply being dishonest. You clearly do not like the iTouch for whatever reason. The things you say are simply not true. You cannot not possibly be this stupid, clumsy or spastic. The story about it starting to play in yur pocket when you are in a meeting is really laughable. What are you doing with the ear buds in your ear during a meeting to start with. Why not admit you are just dishonest and the things you say are untrue?

It's hilarious to watch the hoards of Apple devotees that will jump all over anyone who even remotely critizes the lamest features of an Apple product, like Apple can do no wrong.

It's no wonder the stock is so expensive, how often in history has a company figured out how to charge ridiculous margins for stuff and have everyone call it life changingly amazing.

I think they should double their prices - I bet the volume wouldn't even go down! Idiots would keep buying products like the Air with features you can get anywhere and pay twice the price for it.

All this tells me is I need more Apple calls, rationality is not about to overtake the human race anytime soon...

Wow. I think you raised a couple valid points - the classic interface is better for listening to music in my opinion.

But it's "hard to pause the music and lock the screen"? Sounds like you spent a total of 1 minute with the device. Just double-click the single button on the bottom of the touch to bring up the pause button. You can do that at any time - whether you are reading email, on the web, or whatever. Pause/play is easy. It's volume control that I think could be improved.

And I don't think locking could be any easier than it is. Simply push the *other* button on top of the ipod touch and the thing is locked. Unlocking it requires tocuhing that button again and scrolling your finger across the screen. I don't see how leaning against a jacket could turn it on if you actually locked it properly in the first place.

"Jon T Errrr...why did you ever buy it ..."

To answer the very first question .... he didn't BUY IT, most likely as with the vast majority of Apple Hack journalists, the author probably got the iPud Touch for FREE from Apple. How else does the gustapo at Apple PR reign control over all the media hacks that laud obvious junk, with long histories of bugs and flaws from Apple?

...or maybe our little Freddy has realised that his Amazon and Microsoft stocks are worthless and he now wants to buy some Apple stocks for 4 reasons:

    1) Apple stores have the highest sales-per-square-foot ratio among retail stores.

    2) It's share of the personal computer market is steadily increasing and will soon reach 10%

    3) It has incredible brand recognition and loyalty (as you can tell from my fellow Apple lovers in this column).

    4) Finally, Apple products are not just cool, well-designed, well-built and durable, they're actually made to be used by the general population at large. Unlike Microsoft who build their OS to be used by computer nerds with pudgy fingers and failing eyeshight who have nothing better to do than write articles such as this one.

By all means go out and get the Classic ... you'll only help AAPL earnings and my stock. I love my iPod Touch and with the January software upgrade, it's about all I need. The playlist thing you mentioned is just a user preference. If you have more music than space you'll always have to make some choices.

I am not sure why you would be so public in your admission that you are unable to learn how to use one of the easiest devices in the world. Although, if one is unable to properly count to 5 (like yourself), i suppose the ipod touch could be somewhat of a challenge.
Also, you tell people to get an ipod classic. but what if "people" do want wifi and email etc. What if "people" do want to watch videos on a bigger screen? Then you just told them to get the wrong ipod. So, i guess, you want other people to get the wrong ipod for them because you got the wrong ipod for you...

First of all, you are an idiot.

all of those problems sounds like 'personal problems' to me. if you knew you had 50GB worth of music why did you buy ipod touch in the first place knowing it only has 16gb?

don't know how to lock it and don't like the interface? then why did you get it? i find this article offensive talking trash about a product that's clearly a cutting edge technology that's favorited by millions of people, the interface is nice, the product is well designed, if they were going to make ipod touch 160gb do you think people will want classic ipods??

don't write such an useless article and publish it to public, this is all your own personal problems should be put in your own f***king diary. If you think people going to change the way they feel about ipod products from read your retarded article, think again.

Actually, I bought one about two weeks ago. I have been looking at iPods for years, and this was the one that pushed me over the edge. I took a few thousand songs and five thousand photographs on the road with me and without exception, everyone I have shown it to wants one. I upgraded the firmware and apps ($20) and it's now location aware. It has an email client, weather and stocks, which is all I ever use.

Since I didn't have another iPod concept to compare it against, it seems pretty damned nice to me, and I think it has enough cool factor to make it a huge success. Prying $400 out of me hasn't happened in the other 5 generations of this thing. Seems like it motivated at least one human, who suspects others are pulling out credit cards, too.

Sure, I'd like more storage, and that will no doubt come soon. Meantime, it is a great device and while I won't run with it on my next marathon, it sure will be a staple of my daily dress.

If this is an Apple failure, I can't wait to see the next one.

Oh, and this blog post sucks banannas, Fred. Dork.

Oh dear - what a useless article.
Tomorrow Apple will announce record earnings - and you are babbling on about your inability to control your iPod.
Take the offer from 'infuriousmj' and his 5-year old daughter.
My daughters are a bit older (9 and 12) and they will charge you $150 an hour!

Good luck with your next article - maybe some research and thought this time?
