Sun Microsystems (JAVA) Thursday afternoon reported revenue for its fiscal second quarter ended December 30 of $3.615 billion, with EPS of 31 cents a share; that is just ahead of the Street at $3.59 billion and 30 cents.

In the company’s release
, CEO Jonathan Schwartz said the results “clearly demonstrate steady progress against our financial targets and highlight the accelerating demand set to fuel growth in the back half of the fiscal year.”

Sun Thursday rose $1.27, or 8.6%, to $16.09.
