Be Smart About Refrigeration
It may seem trivial, but major appliances can suck away energy needlessly, especially the refrigerator. While you stand there with the door open considering cheddar or mozzarella, you’re only helping raise your energy bill. Never leave the doors open longer than necessary.
For starters, make sure there is breathing space for the appliance. By placing your refrigerator too near other heat sources like the oven, in direct sunlight, or too close to the wall, the refrigerator’s engine will have to work harder to maintain lower temperatures.
Keeping the condenser coils clean also helps the appliance work more efficiently. There is also no need to over-cool stored goods. The temperature should be set between 36-40 Fahrenheit (2–4 Celsius), and the freezer between 0-5 F (-17 to -10 C). Refrigerators and freezers set too low can increase energy usage by as much as 25%.
If you have an old, barely used or nearly empty additional freezer or refrigerator in the basement or cellar, use up or move the goods inside and unplug it. Use it only when needed for throwing parties.
