Water Bills Beware: Part II

You’ve probably told yourself a dozen times, I had better fix that leaky bathroom faucet, but then figured it was not that important to prioritize.

A leaky faucet can add up to 2,700 gallons of wasted water over the year.

Don’t forget to check the outdoor faucets as well, and make sure your children know to turn the faucets off tightly so they won’t leak.

When working with food, try washing large amounts of fruits and vegetables in a pot of clean water rather than running the water the whole time. Also, thawing food with running water is an enormous waste of time and water. Just take the frozen products out earlier, or if you forgot and need a quick fix, use the defrost option on the microwave.

  • Convection is very effective in heating and cooling.

Although running water to defrost food may be a 'waste' of water as you suggest, it is an effective method of defrosting items.

  • Although this post was on saving water, since you mentioned defrost options, here is another way, and I like it better than the microwave which invariable starts to cook the food rather than evenly defrosting. I turn my oven on to 180 degrees, then wnen it comes to temperature, I turn it off and leave the food (usually meat) in the warm oven for 15 min. - 1 hour, depending on the amount and cut. The food thaws evenly.
