Last week's spike in gold prices lifted precious metals funds, but will it last after this week's fallback?
Investors streamed into energy and precious metals funds, gold in particular, as more than $1.1 billion in new investment capital flowed into commodity-related, exchanged-traded products this past week ending Thursday.
As has been the case for two weeks now, energy funds attracted the most inflows in the assets class, this time with $797 million in new capital. Precious metals followed, with $519 million. Those healthy inflows offset the other sectors that saw net outflows. Broad market (multicommodity) funds saw $138 million in outflows, followed by agriculture, with $43 million and industrial metals, which lost $3 million in outflows.
Exchange-traded products (ETPs) include exchange-traded funds (ETFs), exchange-traded vehicles (ETVs) and exchange-traded notes (ETNs)
ETP Inflows/Outflows
The Energy Select SPDR (NYSE Arca: XLE) attracted the most inflows for the third-straight week, with $367 million in new investment capital, followed by SPDR Gold (NYSE Arca: GLD) with $235 million, United States Oil (NYSE Arca: USO) with $197 million, iShares Gold Trust (NYSE Arca: IAU) with $100 million and Market Vectors Oil Services (NYSE Arca: OIH) with $93 million in inflows.
On the other side of the coin, the PowerShares DB Commodity Tracking (NYSE Arca: DBC) led redemptions, with $120 million in outflows, followed by SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production (NYSE Arca: XOP) with $48 million, ProShares UltraShort DJ − UBS Crude Oil (NYSE Arca: SCO) with $45 million, iPath Dow Jones-UBS Commodity Total Return ETN (NYSE Arca: DJP) with $41 million and Elements Rogers International Commodity-Total Return ETN (NYSE Arca: RJI), with $26 million in outflows.
