The video game sector has a strong February, data from market research firm NPD shows.

Video game software sales were up 47% versus the same month last year, UBS analyst Heath Terry notes, while hardware units were up 19% year over year. Sony (SNE) Playstation 3 sales grew 121% in units versus a year ago, and outsold the Microsoft (MSFT) Xbox 360 for the second month in a row. Xbobx units were up 12%. Nintendo Wii units were up 29%. Nintendo DS sales rose 21%; Sony PSP units were up 38%.

Activision (ATVI) U.S. sales were up 172% year-over-year, on strength in Guitar Hero 3 and Call of Duty 4.

Electronic Arts (ERTS) U.S. sales were up 109%, driven by Rock Band; excluding that title, they were up 25%.

THQ’s (THQI) U.S. sales were up 58%. Take Two’s sales were down 17% in the U.S.
