Dividend stocks are more attractive to investors these days due to the decline in interest rates and with the recent reduction in the tax rate on most dividends. Also, investors like dividend stocks for long-term investments as these dividend payments tend to protect the stock price from market volatility that affects non-dividend paying stocks. However, careful analysis of dividend stocks and choosing the right dividend stocks at the right time is critical for investors.

In this article, I will focus on small-cap stocks with a high dividend yield and an ex-dividend date within the next week (July 02 to June 06). These stocks are screened based on the following criteria:

  • Security Type: Common Stock

  • Market Cap: Between $250 million and $2 billion

  • Dividend Yield: Greater than or equal to 3.0%

  • Ex-Dividend Date: Between July 2, 2012, and July 6, 2012

1. Universal Corporation (UVV): Universal Corporation, through its subsidiaries, operates as a leaf tobacco merchant and processor primarily in North America, South America, Africa, Europe, and Asia. Universal Corporation has a market cap of $1.1 billion and is currently trading around $46.26 with a 52 week range of $35.02 to $48.94. The dividend amount is 49 cents per share which is 4.22% dividend yield. The Ex-Dividend date is July 05, 2012, Record date is July 09, 2012 and the dividend payout date is August 13, 2012. The stock has 1.15% returns for the year 2012.

2. American Greetings Corporation (AM-OLD): American Greetings Corporation, together with its subsidiaries, engages in the design, manufacture, and sale of greeting cards and other social expression products worldwide. American Greetings has a market cap of $462.6 million and is currently trading around $14.11 with a 52 week range of $12.47 to $24.84. The dividend amount is 15 cents per share which is 4.18% dividend yield. The Ex-Dividend date is July 02, 2012, Record date is July 05, 2012 and the dividend payout date is July 16, 2012. The stock has 14.63% returns for the year 2012.

3. CH Energy Group Inc. (CHG): CH Energy Group, Inc., through its subsidiaries, Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation and Central Hudson Enterprises Corporation, engages in electric and regulated natural gas utility, and fuel distribution businesses in the United States. CH Energy Group has a market cap of $971.6 million and is currently trading around $65.04 with a 52 week range of $48.00 to $67.48. The dividend amount is 55.5 cents per share which is 3.41% dividend yield. The Ex-Dividend date is July 06, 2012, Record date is July 10, 2012 and the dividend payout date is August 02, 2012. The dividend amount is 35 cents per share which is 3.03% dividend yield. The Ex-Dividend date is July 02, 2012, Record date is July 05, 2012 and the dividend payout date is July 20, 2012. The stock has -1.95% returns for the year 2012.
