Apple iPhone Shortage - Is 3G Coming?

While both international and AT&T (T) carrier stores still have Apple Inc. (APPL) iPhones in stock, there is a growing number of Apple stores that have run out of the popular smartphone, in addition to stockouts at Apple.com, according to RBC Capital Markets.

While many are speculating that this could mean the 3G iPhone is coming or that there is a shortage of components, analyst Mike Abramsky thinks Apple likely underestimated post-holiday demand and expected a first-quarter slowdown that never materialized. He suggested that “Apple probably feels like the dog that caught the car.”

Mr. Abramsky continues to expect a 3G iPhone announcement will be made in the second quarter for a third quarter launch. However, this could come earlier if Apple is able to optimize battery life and address other issues, he told clients in a note.

If Apple replenishes its inventory, RBC’s 2008 iPhone estimates remain above the company’s goal of 10 million units shipped, in the range of 10.5 million to 11 million. The firm’s revenue and earnings per share estimates become $32.7-billion and $5.22, respectively, down from $32.8-billion and $5.24 previously. For 2009, those figures move to $40.4-billion and $6.21, compared to $40.6-billion and $6.23, respectively.

While Mr. Abramsky admits that Apple is vulnerable to a consumer slowdown, he said its momentum may be resistant to a recession given its product ‘stickiness,’ the deferring of other discretionary spending buy customers, international upside, product innovation efforts, attractive pricing and market share gains. He continues to rate Apple shares at “outperform” with a $175 price target.

All these phones are being sent outside the united states. Alot of people want this IPHONE especially in third world countries. I think its a huge positive and shows the potential of how many units can be sold once APPLE opens up these markets. I wrote about Apple a few days ago on thecreatingwealthblog..... I too feel very strongly that this will go back to its highs very soon. The Iphone power is yet to be unleashed with new applications coming in June.

Deutsche Telekom has slashed the price of the iPhone from 399 Euros to 99 Euros. The catch: you have to enter into a contract for an extra 89 Euros per month (ouch). The offer is valid between April 7 and June 30, 2008.

There are rumors that Apple will be selling a 3G iPhone soon so this could be Deutsche Telekom’s way to get rid of old stock. The rumors are based upon reports that the iPhone is out of stock in many Apple stores in the US.
