While it's widely thought that oil prices typically rise during the summer months, below we highlight some performance numbers that bolster the argument. Going back 20 years, the median change in the price of oil from April to September has been 12.46% with gains 65% of the time. The 6-month period from October to March has seen a median gain of 1.94% with gains 62% of the time.

The winter months have been a boon for oil since 2002, however, as the commodity has gained in each of these six-month periods, while summer '06 and summer '03 saw declines.
