The following stocks performed best among the Russell 3000 Index through the first half of 2012. Each has at least doubled on the season. They have thus earned their place on the 2012 All-Star Team of stocks. These stocks have truly earned this All-Star recognition based on the performance they have achieved for their shareholders. For many of the readers here, though, this is the first introduction to some of these names. That said, based on the information I've seen, I would say more of you will be hearing more about many of these names in the future. You might, therefore, want to use the list as a first screen.
As an analyst, I often took past performance into account when seeking a certain type of story. That's because even while past performance does not guarantee future performance, it often is the best reflection of operating performance and opportunity. When taking past performance into account, it was always combined for me with screens for companies with three years of revenue and earnings growth behind them. Many of the companies here do not have that, but that does not mean they will not be successful from July 1st forward.
As you can see by the far right column, most of these stocks have not turned a profit yet, but there are a few with earnings and high growth forecasts. The list certainly includes its share of biotechnology names, a couple homebuilders and real estate relative names, and a splattering of the broader market otherwise. Some of these stocks might prove to be one-season wonders, but a few might make the all-time hall of fame as well. So, let's play ball, and good luck with the second half of the season!
