The Deep Discount Strategy is a Value investing approach to buying select stocks at a price below their fair value. The basis of the strategy is as follows:

  1. Quality: Choose only the highest quality companies with a stellar record of consistently high growth across a number of metrics.
  2. Value: Determine the fair value of the company based on anticipated future growth and a minimum desired compound annual return of 15%.
  3. Target: Buy and hold the company only when the share price is below a margin of safety, set significantly lower that the fair value price.
  4. Enhance: Purchase additional shares if the stock price moves lower, assuming the fair value remains the same.

Bio-Reference Laboratories is a laboratory medical testing services provider serving customers primarily in the New York metropolitan area. The customer base includes physician offices, clinics, hospitals, employers and the government, and it is the fourth-largest testing services provider in the United States. In addition to standard tests, Bio-Reference Laboratories has great expertise in cancer pathology through its GenPath unit. Also of note is the GeneDx genetics laboratory, which is a leading provider in the diagnosis of rare genetic diseases.

Bio-Reference Laboratories has a disproportionately large marketing group, and is very active in promoting its services. The company achieves and will likely continue to achieve strong growth from its marketing efforts, acquisitions, focus on new technology, and geographic expansion.

This strategy borrows heavily from methods taught by Phil Town in his excellent book, "Payback Time." Numbers used in this analysis are sourced primarily from MSN Money.
