There are many different strategies to trade and one of them is to look for dividend stocks. Investors like dividend stocks as long-term investments, as these dividend payments tend to protect the stock price from the market volatility that affects non-dividend paying stocks. However, careful analysis of dividend stocks and choosing the right dividend stocks at the right time is critical for investors.

In this article, I will focus on large cap stocks with a high dividend yield and with their ex-dividend date within the next week (August 06 to August 10). These stocks are screened based on the following criteria:

  • Security Type: Common Stock
  • Market Cap: Greater than $10 billion
  • Dividend Yield: Greater than or equal to 2.5%
  • Ex-Dividend Date: Between August 06, 2012 and August 10, 2012

1. Entergy Corporation (NYSE:ETR): Entergy Corporation, together with its subsidiaries, engages in the electric power production and retail electric distribution operations in the United States. Entergy has a market cap of $12.9 billion and is currently trading around $72.83 with a 52-week range of $57.60 to $74.50. The dividend amount is 83 cents per share, which is 4.54% dividend yield. The Ex-Dividend date is August 07, 2012, Record date is August 09, 2012 and the dividend payout date is September 04, 2012. The stock has 0.01% returns for the year 2012.

2. American Electric Power Co Inc (NYSE:AEP): American Electric Power Company, Inc., a public utility holding company, engages in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electric power to retail customers. American Electric Power has a market cap of $20.6 billion and is currently trading around $42.48 with a 52-week range of $33.09 to $42.71. The dividend amount is 47 cents per share which is 4.42% dividend yield. The Ex-Dividend date is August 08, 2012, Record date is August 10, 2012 and the dividend payout date is September 10, 2012. The stock has 3.05% returns for the year 2012.

3. Spectra Energy Corp (NYSE:SE): Spectra Energy engages in the ownership and operation of a portfolio of natural gas-related energy assets in North America. Spectra Energy has a market cap of $20.1 billion and is currently trading around $30.73 with a 52-week range of $22.80 to $32.27. The dividend amount is 28 cents per share, which is 3.63% dividend yield. The Ex-Dividend date is August 08, 2012, Record date is August 10, 2012 and the dividend payout date is September 10, 2012. 4. Seagate Technology Plc (NASDAQ:STX): Seagate Technology designs, manufactures, markets, and sells hard disk drives for enterprise, client compute, and client non-compute market applications worldwide. Seagate Technology has a market cap of $12.9 billion and is currently trading around $30.47 with a 52-week range of $9.05 to $32.55. The dividend amount is 32 cents per share, which is 3.29% dividend yield. The Ex-Dividend date is August 10, 2012, Record date is August 14, 2012 and the dividend payout date is August 29, 2012. The stock has 85.55% returns for the year 2012.

5. Exxon Mobil Corp (NYSE:XOM): Exxon Mobil engages in the exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas, and manufacture of petroleum products, as well as transportation and sale of crude oil, natural gas, and petroleum products. Exxon Mobil has a market cap of $409.4 billion and is currently trading around $87.30 with a 52 week range of $67.03 to $87.94. The dividend amount is 57 cents per share, which is 2.6% dividend yield. The Ex-Dividend date is August 09, 2012, Record date is August 13, 2012 and the dividend payout date is September 10, 2012. 6. Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE:WFC): Wells Fargo & Company, through its subsidiaries, provides retail, commercial, and corporate banking services primarily in the United States. Wells Fargo has a market cap of $180.5 billion and is currently trading around $34.40 with a 52-week range of $22.58 to $34.59. The dividend amount is 22 cents per share, which is 2.59% dividend yield. The Ex-Dividend date is August 08, 2012, Record date is August 10, 2012 and the dividend payout date is September 01, 2012. The stock has 23.22% returns for the year 2012.
