87% of Cell Phone Retailers Say Use of Applications Has Increased Since Last Year

Tickermine this month surveyed various cell phone retailers and asked respondents about downloads using J2ME Software, a standard in most major cell phones. 40 stores were consulted across the nation including Verizon (VZ), AT&T wireless (T), Radio Shack (RSH) and Alltel (ATEL). Our researchers asked whether applications could be downloaded into their cell phones and all 40 or 100% of those polled responded yes. We asked which were the best applications available and the following applications were cited as best: ESPN MVP, Maps (including Google (GOOG) Maps, Sprint (S) Navigation and VZ Navigation), music, ring tones, Java and Windows Mobile. We asked our researchers what percentage of people download these applications and 18 respondents or 45% of those polled said less than 50%. 22 respondents or 55% of those interviewed said higher than 50%. The average for this question was 24%, our survey found. Interestingly, we asked whether downloads were increasing, decreasing or were about the same as this time last year. Five respondents or 13% said the use of applications was about the same as a year ago, while 35 respondents or 87% said application downloads were definitely increasing.

Less DISH Network (DISH) Receivers Being Returned

Tickermine recently polled 31 Office Depot (ODP) and one Staples (SPLS) locations across the U.S. to ask about returns of DISH Network receivers. Of the stores surveyed, only 62% accept returns of DISH Network recievers (the Staples location was among the locations accepting receivers). Seventy-five percent of stores that accept returns receive 2 or fewer per day, while 20% of stores receive 3-5 returns per day, and 5% recieve more than 5 daily. Of the stores that do accept receiver returns, 60% said they are receiving fewer returns overall and 40% said returns are increasing.

I so want to believe these guys. But from what i can tell, all they do is write up dozens of findings, then pick the 1 in 10 that turns out to have some merit (based on the law of averages), and cheerlead that "call" in the comments section of the blog.

It would be a lot more genuine to include post-mortems on the 90% of findings that turn out to be dead wrong when compared to actual developments.

Even the sell-side analysts have to plot their upgrades and downgrades on a stock price chart on the last page of their reports.
