Details regarding  Apple's (AAPL) new 3G iPhone have been released and it should power tech heavyweights Microsoft (MSFT), Yahoo (YHOO) and Google (GOOG).  As discussed by Steve Jobs at Monday's Worldwide Developers Conference keynote presentation, the phone will debut on July 11th.  The following features should help Microsoft, Yahoo and Google:

  • Microsoft:  The new phone supports Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, a backbone program for business users that facilitates push email, calendar and contact organization.  Users can securely send wireless email with WPA2 Enterprise and 802.1X authentication to corporate networks that use Cisco's IPSec VPN (see here).  This development makes the iPhone a competitor with the Blackberry Enterprise Server, and gives Microsoft a stronghold on this market.
  • Yahoo:  The new phone will provide instant access to Yahoo Finance.  The development is significant since this default setting will direct business users (an iPhone target market) to Yahoo's flagship site.  Business users seeking real time stock information likely will flock to the site.  The phone will further be set to Yahoo to deliver weather information for business travelers (see here).
  • Google:  Apple is touting the phone's enhanced capability to show YouTube videos and to download them at faster speeds with access to the "Featured" "Most Recent" "Most Viewed" and "Top Rated" videos.  YouTube is owned by Google.  Google's focus is to increase its monetarization of YouTube.  Having Apple's mobile audience for its videos is a coup for its advertisements and paid, featured listings (see here).

The new iPhone has many more features (IMAP email, SMS, MobileMe software, etc).  The ones listed here could create substantial profits.

Disclosure: Author holds long positions in GOOG, MSFT

Net loss for MSFT. No new customers will migrate TO an obsolete architecture like Exchange BECAUSE of the iPhone; they'll do it because they are "good little MSFT cultists". And Win Mobile is toast.

    Google/Apple? This century's MSFT/INTEL. YEA MAN!

Weak point on Yahoo, really weak. If you think MSFT will perform because Apple is licensing Activesync (or Active-stink as Phil Shiller called it in the presentation) you are way off base. I believe activesync gets them in the game today with exchange users but if they are providing their owns servers to provide push notifications, how long will it be before they create their own integration with exchange without activesync? Just a thought. MSFT is slipping away slowly but surely...

Windows Mobile is in solid shape globally. Palm OS looks to be dead.
