Dividend stocks are wonderful because they increase my cash with regular payments. One major date in relation to the payment is the ex-dividend date. If you own a stock before this date, you get the next payment. This is very interesting because in the case of a high yield stock, I can earn at least one percent in cash for a short period of investing.

I screened stocks with ex-dividend date within the upcoming week. 238 common and preferred shares have their ex-dividend date between August 27 and September 02. Exactly 41 of them have a dividend yield above 5%. Many of them have a high yield because the market believes that the dividend is not sustainable. Especially in the case of low capitalized stocks or stocks with very high yields over 10%, the possibility of a dividend cut is much higher as for stocks with a higher capitalization at normal yields. Because of this, I decided to select only those stocks with a market capitalization over $2 billion and a dividend yield below 10%. These are the results:

1. Old Republic International (ORI) has a market capitalization of $2.31 billion. The company generates revenue of $4,645.50 million and has a net income of $-140.60 million. The firm's EBITDA amounts to $-151.20 million. The EBITDA margin is -3.25% (operating margin -5.10% and net profit margin -3.03%).

The total debt represents 5.69% of the company's assets and the total debt in relation to the equity amounts to 24.20%. Last fiscal year, a return on equity of -3.56% was realized. Twelve trailing months earnings per share reached a value of $-0.37. Last fiscal year, the company paid $0.70 in form of dividends to shareholders. The ex-dividend date is on August 30, 2012.

Here are the price ratios of the company: The P/E ratio is not calculable, Price/Sales 0.50 and Price/Book ratio 0.61. Dividend Yield: 7.96%. The beta ratio is 0.82.

2. TransAlta (TAC) has a market capitalization of $3.66 billion. The company generates revenue of $2,683.94 million and has a net income of $345.70 million. The firm's EBITDA amounts to $1,166.10 million. The EBITDA margin is 43.45% (operating margin 24.22% and net profit margin 12.88%).

The total debt represents 41.36% of the company's assets and the total debt in relation to the equity amounts to 123.49%. Last fiscal year, a return on equity of 10.48% was realized. Twelve trailing months earnings per share reached a value of $-2.81. Last fiscal year, the company paid $1.17 in form of dividends to shareholders. The ex-dividend date is on August 29, 2012.

Here are the price ratios of the company: The P/E ratio is not calculable, Price/Sales 1.36 and Price/Book ratio 1.31. Dividend Yield: 7.08%. The beta ratio is 0.90.

3. Sun Life Financial (SLF) has a market capitalization of $13.85 billion. The company generates revenue of $22,758.52 million and has a net income of $-185.45 million. The firm's EBITDA amounts to $-2,099.38 million. The EBITDA margin is -9.22% (operating margin -2.79% and net profit margin -0.81%).

The total debt represents 3.57% of the company's assets and the total debt in relation to the equity amounts to 49.52%. Last fiscal year, a return on equity of -2.20% was realized. Twelve trailing months earnings per share reached a value of $-0.73. Last fiscal year, the company paid $1.45 in form of dividends to shareholders. The ex-dividend date is on August 27, 2012.

The total debt represents 24.77% of the company's assets and the total debt in relation to the equity amounts to 50.52%. Last fiscal year, a return on equity of 18.76% was realized. Twelve trailing months earnings per share reached a value of $2.60. Last fiscal year, the company paid $2.44 in form of dividends to shareholders. The ex-dividend date is on August 14, 2012.

Here are the price ratios of the company: The P/E ratio is 18.13, Price/Sales 5.12 and Price/Book ratio 4.56. Dividend Yield: 5.67%. The beta ratio is 1.56.
