(EBAY) Monday won a legal victory over Tiffany with a federal judge ruling that Tiffany failed to prove the online auctioneer was responsible for the sale of fake Tiffany jewelry on its marketplaces. This obviously sets an important precedent for EBAY but, more importantly, is a major victory for EBAY's Verified Rights Owner (VeRO) Program, which was created to allow intellectual property owners to easily and effectively report listings that infringe their rights.

The Tiffany lawsuit was brought against EBAY after the VeRO program was in place. While lawsuits brought against EBAY prior to VeRO have recently sided with the intellectual property holder, this result highlights the effectiveness of the program in fighting counterfeit or illegal listings.
