The Wall Street Journal reported on June 19 that Astoria Financial had dramatically reduced the number of its nonperforming loans by changing its internal policy on when mortgages are classified on its books as troubled. Astoria now considers home loans to be nonperforming when the borrower misses three payments, compared with its previous policy of categorizing all loans on which two payments have been missed as nonperforming.
